The building is being sensitively renovated to provide an additional storey to the existing building as well as a brand new four storey connecting building with a basement.

The proposed basement is being constructed close to the existing basement with detailed sequencing and retaining wall design established to ensure the existing structure is protected.  

The basement is constructed in reinforced concrete to form the earth retaining structure. The above ground structure is framed in steel, masonry, and timber to retain the building’s historic appeal yet maximise the performance of floor spans.

JHD have utilised a 3D Revit model of the exiting and proposed structure to aid design co-ordination between the project team.

Through a joint venture with us, the architects and contractors we purchased, designed and developed an L-shaped site just on the corner of Deptford Park. 

Five new contemporary 3/4 bedroom houses were constructed along with the complete refurbishment of the existing building into two separate homes. 

A high level of design inside and out was of prime importance to create lovely places for people to live. 

The rear part of the site was retained and turned into an eco-garden which is part allotment and used by local businesses providing locally grown produce to two London restaurants.

Located in the Essex countryside, this family home is based on a pin-wheel design with four single storey pavilions connected at central double height core.

The structural design uses a combination of steel framing and load bearing cavity walls with cantilevered canopies overlooking the landscaped gardens and parkland. 

Other features include an external swimming pool, sunken courtyard garden and the use of sustainable technologies such as ground source heat pumps and green roofs.

This new build house is being built on a cliff top overlooking the Irish Sea and will provide two storeys of accommodation.

Materials including Corten weathering steel and slate will be used to reflect the historic industries associated with the local area.

JHD are providing structural and civil design services and are working with award winning Scandinavian architects Ström. 

The residential scheme will boast an internal area of over 7,000 sq ft, have an indoor swimming pool, basement and sophisticated architectural detailing. 

Large cantilevered sections of the upper floor will appear to hang without support. This will be achieved with steel vierendeel trusses hidden within wall lines giving the perception of an unsupported section of the building. 

Prefabricated panels with brick slips will be utilised to maintain consistency and quality but will also speed up the construction phase.

A highly sensitive approach was taken with the existing materials and fabric with close relationships developed with heritage and planning consultants. Existing materials such as the original flag stones were re-used as well as existing bricks for the rear elevation. 

Traditional materials and workmanship were used including lime mortar of the masonry and lime render was used internally for the re-rendering of the internal walls. 

The lower ground floor space was opened up with new support structure sensitively and seamlessly integrated into the existing building fabric. 

High quality interiors were achieved with hand made kitchen furniture and a completely refurbished original internal staircase.

This new build house is being built on a sloping site to replace an existing property and will provide two storeys of accommodation.

The project has a keen budget and therefore a design and build contract is being used to allow early engagement with the contractor and their sub-contractors. Structural materials have been chosen to suit the budget and the contractors supply chain. 

Key challenges include constructing the build into a sloping site and working closely with the architects and contractors to maintain design quality and meet budgetary requirements.
