Jensen Hunt Design provided structural design services for the refurbishment of this Victorian pub located at the end of Brick Lane, London.

The building has been renovated to provide a gastro pub at ground floor and basement with hotel accommodation to the upper floors. All floors were refurbished to suit its revised use and the layout amended to incorporate a new full height staircase.

Jensen Hunt’s work included the justification of the existing structure to support an additional storey of hotel accommodation and a new roof terrace providing views across the London skyline.

The 4th floor was designed as a ‘crash deck’ to satisfy disproportionate collapse requirements in accordance with Building Regulations.

We’re proud to have played a key role in delivering two of On Running’s latest UK stores, in Spitalfields Market and Battersea Power Station.

Both projects came with unique challenges — from navigating strict landlord fit-out requirements to working within the constraints of heritage-protected structures. With intrusive investigations off the table, our team had to strike a careful balance between conservative design, buildability, and cost.

Through close collaboration with the architect and contractor, we delivered innovative, cost-effective solutions that met both technical and aesthetic demands.

4 Bath Place, in London’s vibrant Shoreditch, has been extensively re-furbished to create an exciting new base for the UK operation of Armada Music.

As the structural engineers for the project, Jensen Hunt had to adapt the existing structural frame and slabs to facilitate the installation of upgraded services and new room uses.

A major challenge was the addition of two ‘box-in-box’ recording studios onto the existing floor plates. The stringent acoustic specifications demanded very dense wall, floor and ceiling construction and Jensen Hunt Design were required to justify the existing structure for these heavy studio finishes.

Jensen Hunt Design provided structural design services for the refurbishment of New Cobham House.

Located in the St Paul’s Conservation Area, this 1980s purpose-built office building is undergoing a major programme of structural-led refurbishment to enhance its usability and appeal. The reinforced concrete frame – with ribbed slabs, downstand beams, RC columns and lift core – provides a robust base for a series of interventions designed to modernise the building.

The works focus on key structural alterations, including:

Creating a new main entrance by forming a façade opening and constructing a bridge across the basement lightwell. Refurbishing and reconfiguring the existing “bell tower” with new accommodation and a connecting stair between the 5th and 6th floors.

Undertaking structural modifications to enable a revised internal layout and improved entrance sequence.

Concrete repairs and exposure of the structural soffits as part of the CAT A refurbishment.

Upgrading below-ground drainage to suit the new configuration.

These interventions transform the existing frame to accommodate modern office requirements, while retaining the building’s core structure and character.

88 Wood Street is a high rise structure located in the City of London, a Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners designed building completed in 2000. The building consists of 18 storeys over a double basement and provides CAT office space throughout with supporting commuter facilities. It shares some signature architectural features seen in other renowned buildings design by the firm such as the brightly coloured funnel air ducts also seen at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

The scope of works included; phased refurbishment of the upper office floors, provision of new cycle parking and commuter facilities, an additional A1 retail unit within the reception space, a new office amenity in existing lobby, the refurbishment of the main reception and general internal alterations throughout including an extensive new green wall.

The refurbishment successfully brought the building in line with BCO recommendations, with the net internal area of the refurbished areas totalling 71,408ft2.

This 16-storey commercial tower currently offers retail spaces on the ground floor, with office accommodations on the floors above.

The proposed upgrades encompassed several key improvements: refurbishing the main reception and front entrance, exposing the coffered precast concrete floor slabs, adding a new commuter facility at the rear, extending the double lift core, delivering a CAT A fit-out for the upper floors, and specifying repairs to the existing structure.

The main challenges included carrying out the work while minimising disruption to the tenants and constructing the commuter facility over existing services and around below-ground obstructions.
